There are several dental restorations that are designed to make your teeth look better and function properly, but with so many options, you may find yourself wondering which one is best for you. At Charlestown Dental Care, we want to provide you with all your options and let you choose what works best for your oral health. Depending on your specific dental issues, veneers or crowns may be a viable choice.

What Is a Veneer?

A dental veneer is a procedure where a thin layer of porcelain is added to the front of your tooth, thus giving it a more appealing appearance and supporting your natural tooth. For the dental veneer process, your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from your tooth before bonding the veneer in place.

What Is a Crown?

A dental crown, however, covers your entire tooth instead of just the front of it. A crown fits like a cap on top of your existing tooth. For the dental crown process, your dentist will also remove enamel from your tooth, fix any decay that may be present, or build the tooth up if it has been damaged. Then, they will make an impression of your tooth so the lab can create your permanent crown. In the meantime, a temporary crown will be put on your tooth until the permanent crown can be placed.

Which One Is Better for Me?

It is always your decision regarding your dental health, but there are certain applications where veneers and crowns may be a better option.

Veneers – You are a candidate for veneers if your tooth is intact and you are mainly looking for a cosmetic restoration to improve the appearance or shape of your tooth.

Crowns – You are a candidate for crowns if you have a large filling in your tooth, have had root canal therapy, or if your tooth is severely worn or cracked. Dental crowns are aesthetically pleasing like veneers, but they aim to preserve and support your natural tooth.
