Is It Common for Dental Crowns to Fall Off?

The general answer to this question is no — it is not common for dental crowns to fall off. However, there are some circumstances to be aware of where a crown could fall off:

  • Failed cement — The glue or cement that keeps your crown in place can wear away over time.
  • Decay — If decay gets underneath your crown, it could cause failure.
  • Trauma — An accident or trauma to your tooth could dislodge your crown.
  • Failure to fit correctly — If your crown wasn't properly fitted to begin with, it may not stay in place.
  • Tooth grinding (bruxism) — Clenching or grinding your teeth at night could cause damage or failure to your crown.

If your crown falls off, you can immediately contact your Charlestown dentist for care. If possible, we will need to glue it back into place or create a new restoration to protect your smile and dental health.

How to Protect Your Smile Investment

Did you know there are steps you can take to promote the health and longevity of your dental crown? Here are some helpful tips on how you can protect your dental crown.

  • Consistent oral hygiene — Brushing and flossing your teeth consistently at home will keep your restoration clean and bacteria-free, protecting against tooth decay.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods — Cutting hard foods into manageable bite-sized pieces and avoiding sticky foods that could pull off a crown will help protect your smile investment.
  • Routine teeth cleans and check-ups — Visiting your Charlestown dentist every six months for preventive teeth cleans and exams will ensure your restoration is healthy and functioning properly.
  • Guard against tooth grinding—Wear a custom mouthguard at night while you sleep to protect your teeth from tooth clenching and grinding (bruxism). Bruxism can cause wear and damage to your teeth and restorations.

We invite you to call Charlestown Dental Care if you have questions or concerns about your dental health or restorations.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks, and we recommend seeking a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner before proceeding.
